Novel history

Historical fiction is currently enjoying a renaissance in terms of both literary and commercial success, and it is an exciting time for research, with historians uncovering previously hidden history. So, what is the secret of a great historical novel? How much research does it take? When should you stop reading and start writing? What are the pleasures and pitfalls of putting real people into fiction?
