Courses for young people

Arvon is all about getting people writing, especially young people. On our residential writing courses we give each participant the opportunity, the time and the space to write, supported by expert practical tuition and the encouragement of a writing community. We seek to create the ideal environment, a situation where newcomers can begin writing and the more experienced can find new sustenance and inspiration.

For many young people the experience of being in a remote rural setting, away from the trappings of busy modern life - mobile phones, email, the internet and television– provides them with a unique and life-changing experience.

Held at one of four houses located in the Devon, Inverness-shire, Shropshire or West Yorkshire countryside, our courses provide an opportunity to spend time writing, discussing writing, and receiving professional tuition from experienced writers. The secluded atmosphere where there are no distractions, other than the beautiful countryside, allows everyone to immerse themselves in their work. For the vast majority of our participants, the chance to work and live as a writer amongst other writers, acts as a huge catalyst and inspiration and has a profound and continuing effect for years to come.

The poet Lemn Sissay began his writing life as a student on an Arvon schools course.
